Water: how much do you need to stay healthy?
Drinking the right amount of water will have a hugely positive effect on your health
and wellbeing. So how can you ensure you are getting the right amount?
Most of us know how essential water is to leading a healthy life, but it's easy
to underestimate the amount that your body needs to operate at its best. Your body
can only survive for a few days without water because we have no reserves of it
in our bodies. A simple way to calculate your ideal water intake is to divide your
body weight in pounds by half, and drink that many fluid ounces of water per day.
For example, if you way 140lbs, you should drink at least 70oz of water daily, which
is about eight or nine glasses of a normal sized glass.
Water and weight loss- three key facts
Not only is water calorie-free, but drinking the optimum amount also increases your
metabolism, meaning that you'll burn calories 3% faster.
Staying hydrated can prevent overeating, as you are not simply responding to hunger
or thirst signals (which are easy to confuse) with food.
Drinking water at regular intervals can help you reduce the size and frequency of
between-meal snacks.
Water and exercise - three key facts
Water keeps your digestion working smoothly, which in turn allows your body to absorb
the nutrients it needs, and increases your energy levels - critical when you are
following an exercise or training regime.
A 2% drop in the water surrounding our cells has a huge effect on our energy levels,
resulting in a drop as much as 20%.
Water can have a major effect on exercise performance, so it is important to star
any exercise session well hydrated. Drinking water before, during and after exercise
will also reduce the risk of muscle cramp and stiffness.
Work more water into your day.
Keep a glass of water beside your bed and drink it before you get up each morning.
Keep a bottle of water in your day bag to keep you hydrated when you are on the
move. Take a bottle of water with you when you are on car journeys. Include foods
that have a high water content in your diet, such as soups, salads and juices. Roughly
20% of your water intake should come from the food that you eat. Order a glass of
tap water whenever you sit down for a coffee or other drink. Watch out for the early
signs of dehydration such as mild headaches, tiredness and irritability, and drink
a glass of water rather than reaching for a tablet.
